Report of the Priest-in-Charge
2011 has been a year filled with both joy and sadness in our common life, but always embraced with great care. When Bishop Shannon visited in February we baptized Alexis, Alex and Aleyah Senegal and Phillip Smith. Michael Thomas was confirmed and Pete Overman re-affirmed her baptismal vows. Susan Hafey and David Storke were received. And following the service, we enjoyed an extraordinary reception graced by Carolyn Murdoch who played the harp.
Easter came a bit early this year as we celebrated our first Easter Vigil and then rose early to join our brothers and sisters across the street for a sunrise service. Later the church was filled for our Easter morning service and traditional egg hunt. And on Pentecost we hung our tongues of fire which Linda Sullivan made for us last year and enjoyed our reading from Acts in multiple languages.
In May, my title changed from Interim Rector to Priest-in Charge!
In June we buried Garland Gravatt and then, in October, we buried George Davis. Both Garland and George were dear friends to many and trustees of this parish. Their absence continues to be felt.
At the end of the summer we sent Janet Nunnally off to the Episcopal Service Corps in Baltimore and her brother, J.W., to service in the military.
In October, Susan Richardson and Chris Hancock were married.
And during this year, Claudia and Mark DePollo, Thelma Kelleher, and Stephen, Lori, Annelizabeth, Sarah, and Scarlett Ferrigan transferred into the parish.
We survived an earthquake and a hurricane, holding our Sunday service outside the last Sunday in August when we lost power. And on the evening of September 11, we gathered at St. Peter’s for a service of remembrance.
The year is not over and we are looking forward to a service on Thanksgiving eve this Wednesday and then Advent and Christmas. Our Christmas pageant will be December 18, followed by our Christmas eve service and a Sunday service on Christmas day.
As we come together today, I trust you will celebrate with me the richness of our common life this past year. We have laughed together and cried together; we have played and worked together ; and most especially, we have worshipped together. May we give thanks to God for the many wonders of this year and look forward a new year filled with the blessings of God’s love.
